Childcare and education
Pre-school and childcare
Area
In the Municipality of Söderköping we have pre-schools, leisure-time centres and registered child-minding homes. The services are run both municipally and independently. The municipal services are divided into four geographical areas headed by an area principal: Aspveden, Broby, Centrala and Östra.
Pre-school
Children between the ages of 1 to 5 years old are eligible for a pre-school placement. The opening hours are from 6.15 am at the earliest to 6.30 pm at the latest, Monday to Friday. Universal pre-school, which is available to all children from the age of 4, shall comprise 525 hours per year and free of charge, which means it corresponds to the same volume and term time as pre-school class.
Both children with job-seeking parents and children whose parents are on parental leave shall be entitled to a placement within a municipal or independent pre-school. This form of childcare is offered to all children from the age of 1 to the month of August when the child is 6 years old. The Children and Education Committee dictate, in this situation, that the childcare shall amount to 3 hours a day or a total of 15 hours a week maximum. The placement is thus organised in consultation with the parents and the hours which the pre-school allows. The registration and placement is offered under the same conditions and with the same fee as for other children.
Open pre-school In Söderköping
Open pre-schools are run by the Church of Sweden and are intended for parents who are at home with their children without enrolment. The staff and the parents are given the opportunity of developing pedagogical group activities for the children.
School-age child care
Care for school children aged 6-12 years old is offered in the form of leisure-time centres which have the same opening times as pre-school, 6.15 am to 6.30 pm and are located on the same premises as the school.
Family day-care homes
Registered childminders receive enrolled children from 1 to 12 years old into their homes. The opening hours are the same as above.
Private childcare
In Söderköping you can find a number of private childcare providers. They are run in the form of parent cooperatives, foundations, limited companies, independent schools or by the church.
Childcare fees
At each area office you can find information about childcare placements, register your child and receive details about childcare fees. Universal pre-school is free of charge.
Compulsory school
The municipality’s compulsory schools outside Söderköping town centre, such as schools in the communities of Sankt Anna, Mogata, Västra Husby and Östra Ryd offer education from Year 1 to Year 6. In the town centre, the schools of Skönberga, Haga, Björkbacken and Broby also teach Year 1 to Year 6 and at Berga and Ramunder Years 7 – 9. In many schools, integrated classes are run in cooperation with pre-school class, leisure-time centre and school. Music classes are available at Ramunder, Björkbacken and Haga and art classes at Ramunder. At Lagbergska, the resource school Ankaret is organised.
Before the autumn term of pre-school class, the child’s custodians may request where they would like their child to go. This is also the case before beginning Year 7.
Pre-school class
All six year olds are entitled to a pre-school placement three hours per day during term time and school days.
Independent schools
In the Municipality of Söderköping, Waldorf and Gårdeby are our independent schools.
Special schools
Both Ramunder School and Björkbacken’s School have special school, age-integrated classes. Children who need training classes are referred to the Municipality of Norrköping. The Municipality of Söderköping pays for the services that the children need. The Municipality of Norrköping also provides for the needs of special schools and training school placements for Söderköping’s upper-secondary school pupils.
Municipal meal services
In the Municipality of Söderköping, 3500 meals are served daily to pre-schools, childcare services, schools and elderly care units amongst others. The municipal food unit is classified under the Children and Education Committee. The food is prepared in six satellite kitchens of which three are in town: Storäng’s kitchen, Ramunder School’s kitchen and Nyströmska School’s kitchen. Other satellite kitchens are found at Stenbrinken in Sankt Anna, Aspgården in Östra Ryd and Västra Husby Pre-school. The meals are transported from the kitchens in special purpose vehicles to pre-schools, schools and elderly care facilities. The menu is the same but is adapted to different groups.
