Children and young people
Youth Recreation Centre Focus
Our youth recreation centre Focus is centrally-located on the premises of Ramunder School. The ideas and willingness of the young people that attend lay the foundations for all the activities there. Through inventing, running and taking responsibility for their own projects the youngsters experience a valuable learning process.
What can you do at Focus?
The majority come to Focus to meet their friends and spend time together.
But also to meet adults who are good at listening and understanding the needs young people have to ask questions, express themselves and be involved in different activities. There are a wide range of different activities at the centre. Indoors you can play table tennis, board games and TV games or use the computers. If you are interested in music or play in a band you have access to our rehearsal studios, recording studio and computers.
In 2008 we opened an outdoor area next to Focus with a climbing wall and a multi-sport arena where you can play football and basketball amongst other things. We also have a skateboard ramp and an outdoor stage set up.
Meeting places
Besides the centre located on the premises of Ramunder School, Focus also has meetings places in the communities of Mogata, Västra Husby and Östra Ryd. In Västra Husby you can find a youth recreation centre opened by the Church of Sweden in cooperation with the community living there.
A focus on equality
At Focus, everyone shall feel welcome regardless of gender, cultural background, sexual preference or disability.
Equality and equal opportunities shall be the basis of all activities at the centre.
When the premises were built, special attention was given to the construction and interior design of the centre so that both girls and boys would feel equally welcome.
Little Focus
Within Focus there is also short-term supervision for young people with disabilities between the ages of 7 and 21 years old. Short-term supervision is a type of extended leisure-time centre which opens after school hours, during holidays and study days.
Little Focus arranges three different camps every year; two summer camps and one winter camp. We also arrange evening events and discos.
Associations
The Municipality of Söderköping is home to about 20 sports associations, including football, basketball, horse-riding and golf, as well as more unusual sports such as lacrosse and karate. Another 80 associations are involved in everything from politics to bee-keeping.
Start your own association
If you can’t find an association that suits you or you have a special interest, you can start your own association. Contact the Sports and Leisure Office to help you get started. Associations with youth activities can claim a grant of 2 000 SEK per year and also apply for local activity benefits.
Youth coordinators
Municipal youth coordinators work to create cooperation between the different groups and organisations in Söderköping which meet children and youngsters in their work. One of the main tasks is to help children and youngsters become independent individuals with self-esteem, who feel safe in each other’s company and who treat each other with respect. Coordination groups which work with capturing children’s, young people’s and adults’ ideas and making use of their commitment and enthusiasm is the core of our work. The child coordination groups work with children from 0-12 years of age and coordination groups with young people from 13 years old upwards. In most units that work with children and young people - like schools – there are contact persons available to listen to the ideas you want to develop. The idea is that the children and young people themselves shall run their own projects together with the coordinators. Funds for the project are either provided by the municipality or are applied for elsewhere.
Life Knowledge
Coordinators also work to develop the subject Life Knowledge which is taught in pre-schools and schools.
The goal is for all children and young people to have at least one hour of this subject per week. Life Knowledge is about helping youngsters to develop self-esteem and confidence in themselves and the community as a whole. Here, you discuss actively but also participate in practical exercises.
Youth health
Young people under the age of 20 who need assistance can visit Youth Health which is located at Söderköping’s Health Centre. At Youth Health, you can speak to an adult about difficult and troubling issues such as family life, relationships, contraception, pregnancy and abortion. But also receive help with reporting sick, finding work and support.
Söderköping School of the Arts
The School of the Arts in Söderköping is a voluntary school for those who want to learn to play a musical instrument, sing or practise any of our new subjects in drama/theatre and creative workshops in image and form. The goal of the school is to reach as many municipal residents as possible and enable children and adults to actively participate in music and cultural activities.
How do I apply?
If you wish to start playing an instrument you can choose how to begin. You can either go to one of the school’s instrument demonstrations which take place in May every year or you can ring the school’s switchboard for more information. If you don’t own your own instrument you can rent an instrument for 300 SEK per term. The exception is if you play the guitar, drums or piano in which case you must acquire your own instrument.
About the school
Söderköping School of the Arts has about 320 pupils between 6 and 20 years old. Most start school at 8 or 9 years of age. The school can organise special tuition for those students who wish to continue studying music after upper- secondary education. The school fees are 900 SEK per term. The fees for drama/theatre groups and image and form are 500 SEK per term.
