Municipal archives

The municipal archives preserve and take care of municipal documents as a part of our cultural heritage. In the archives you can find historical documents from all of the municipal operations such as schools, social services, environment and public health and town planning and construction. Documents from areas that were once governed by their own municipalities like Stegeborg and Aspveden, are also stored here. The documents are preserved, handled and made accessible according to Swedish Archival Law and the Archival Regulations decided upon by the Municipal Council.

According to the Principal of Publicity, everyone has the right to access documents which are stored in the municipal archives. Some documents however may be regulated by the Secrecy Act detailing what government agencies can keep secret, what type of document, under what circumstances, and towards whom.

The municipal archives are located in the civic offices and visits are made by appointment. Research facilities and a photocopier are available to study the documents. Your questions and queries about the archives are always welcome via telephone or email.

The task of the Municipal Archives not only involves handling the documents in the municipal archives but also monitoring the municipality’s administrations own filing and archiving systems.
