Water and sewage

The goal for the Water and Sewage Unit is both to deliver good quality water and, in a safe and secure way process sewage water at a reasonable cost. This also includes strictly following our Environmental Protection Strategy. The quality demands imposed on water and water pipelines are high and are thus classed as food. These demands are also made on water treatment so as to not disturb watercourses. In Söderköping and Östra Ryd, we have the advantage of being able to deliver drinking water which is filtered through sand and gravel layers without the use of chemicals.

Waterworks

We have 6 waterworks located in Söderköping, Västra Husby, Östra Ryd, Mogata, Bottna and Sankt Anna.

Distribution

The waterworks deliver a yearly total of about 900 000 m3 of drinking water or just over 2 400 m3 during a normal week day through 50 000 metres of pipelines. We work to prevent water stoppages through the use of numerous independent facilities and inserting reserve power facilities at crucial points. We also decrease the length of stoppages through sound preparedness.

Monitoring

Both water and sewage works are constantly monitored by computerised distribution automation control systems which in the case of an incident send an alert to the staff working on call.

Quality control

In the drinking water public notice, the quality demands on water are regulated and the building and environment committee have a supervisory role. The water is tested regularly to ensure the quality. We analyse about 70 water samples at certified laboratories every year.

Sewage treatment works

There are 7 sewage treatment works in our municipality located in Östra Ryd, Västra Husby, Söderköping, Mogata, Sankt Anna, Tyrislöt and Bottna. Different demands are made on the treatment results depending on how environmentally-sensitive the watercourse which receives the clean water is. The sewage treatment works, also known as wastewater works, are built to achieve a cleaning effect of over 90% on oxygen-using material and phosphor. Wastewater treatment is monitored by the Environmental Protection Office and the County Administrative Board according to an established sample-testing programme.
Söderköping town has a modern, three-step wastewater treatment works which, at the beginning of 2002 was supplemented by 3 sludge filter beds over a hectare of ground on Memsängarna, 2 km east of the town. Water which has gone through the first treatment stage is pumped here for the second biological treatment phase. The reduction in nitrogen has been calculated to about 75% compared to an earlier 40%. Phosphor reduction was already 98-99% before the second phase was introduced.
