The City

Cobblestones, alleys and medieval churches; a small-scale settlement set in a beautiful environment provides a cosy atmosphere.

Medieval city

Söderköping was founded in the beginning of the 13th century around the City Hall square. The city plan is largely the same today however, the medieval settlement was more compact and there were more alleys.  The city was once an important port city and coronation of kings and important parliamentary sessions have been held here. Söderköping is a paradise for archaeologists - the city lies on dense clay providing unique preservative conditions for organic materials such as wood and leather, it is also one of the cities with the richest archaeological findings in the country. The brochure "Söderköping beneath our feet” is a guide to medieval Söderköping based on results from archaeological diggings.

Interesting settlement

In Söderköping there are many interesting buildings; from the medieval churches, and the beautiful City Hall from the 18th century to a rebuilt silo at the Canal Harbour from 2005.  Don't miss the Drothem quarter’s small, low cabins and winding alleys in the historic monastery area, the spa environment from the 18th and 19th centuries beautifully situated in Brunnsparken between Storå River and the canal or Korskullen which was once meant to be a mini-redoubt with old buildings from the area. With the brochure "Söderköping on your own" your will find out much more while experiencing the city on your own.
If you want to visit the municipality's medieval churches, they are all described in the brochure "Söderköping's churches - a door to medieval times" which can also be downloaded here or picked up as a printed folder at the Tourist Office.

Nature and gardens

There is a rose garden at Hagatorget in the middle of the city and a delightful herb garden only a stone's throw from there, on Skönbergagatan. At the lock at the Canal Harbour you can climb up Ramunder Mountain, a nature reserve with a wonderful view, and good walking paths and exercise tracks
